Ch’ing Administrative Terms: A Translation of the Terminology of the Six Boards with Explanatory Notes

This is an annotated translation of the Liu-pu ch’eng-yü, a phrase dictionary widely used by government clerks in China from the eighteenth century to the end of the Ch’ing dynasty; “explanatory notes” were added at the end of the nineteenth century. The book is a rich source of pertinent phrases, and it presents a vivid picture, through the explanatory notes, of how the Ch’ing government functioned and of the social and economic environment that sustained the government. The translation adheres closely to the original text; where the meaning is doubtful, the translator-editor has provided careful annotation.
