INSTRUMENTS OF DEATH
An exhilarating symphony began as mortars, machine
guns, grenades, rockets, and assault rifles
played their deadly theme, repeated by echoes
from the surrounding hills. The music was glorious.
At times it almost burst the eardrums with a
wall of pure sound. At other times each weapon's
unique noise signature could be distinguished, as
rifle and rocket played point and counterpoint. It
was Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky's
1812 Overture, and every martial theme that
ever raced through the frenetic mind of Richard
Wagner, and it was all synthesized and mechanized,
played by instruments of death. Its effect
on me was almost sublime. For the first time in
my life I could understand Patton, Napoleon,
and other war-lovers. For the moment, at least,
there was no greater glory than what I was experiencing.
